Cat sitting in Arlington

Veterans Park — 3600 W. Arkansas Ln. in 76016, 103 acres in west Arlington with a 1.44-mile hike and bike trail, wildscape and xeriscape gardens, a nature area and a performing arts bandshell. It is the only park in the city with a disc golf course and one of only two with an equestrian trail, which is worth knowing if your dog is reactive to horses. The gardens and tree cover are why our sitters pick it for afternoon walks in July.

Arlington’s three off-leash dog parks — and the days they are shut — this is the detail that ruins an afternoon if you get it wrong. Tails ’N Trails, 950 SE Green Oaks Blvd. in 76018, is 5.7 acres, fully fenced, wooded and open areas, free, daylight hours — and closed every Tuesday until noon. It sits next door to the Arlington Animal Services Center at 1000 SE Green Oaks Blvd., which is handy if a tag or a chip question comes up. Rush Creek Dog Park, 1900 Valleywood Dr. in 76013, is 4.8 acres with separate large and small paddocks, dog bone-shaped shaded benches, climbing boulders, drinking fountains for dogs and people, security lighting and two lots with at least 60 spaces — and it is closed every Wednesday until noon. Three dogs per owner at both, leashed until you are inside the double gate. The newest is the Downtown Arlington Doggie Depot at 105 N. Mesquite St. in 76011, downtown’s first dog park, opened in March 2025 and within walking distance of the farmers market. All of them shut after heavy rain, so we call the rainout line at 817-462-8441 before anyone drives out.

River Legacy Park — 701 NW Green Oaks Blvd. in 76006, and by a wide margin the best walk in Arlington. The city puts it at 1,031 acres of hardwood floodplain forest along the Trinity River, its largest park, holding 400 species of wildlife, 193 species of birds and 28 species of trees. There are more than ten miles of cross-country trails that DORBA rates as some of the best around, plus paved paths, and the whole thing is Arlington’s piece of a planned 75-mile greenbelt running from west Fort Worth through east Dallas. Leashed dogs are welcome. The River Legacy Living Science Center sits alongside it, and there is a separate River Legacy Park — East at 54 acres with its own half-mile loop if you want something shorter.

Arlington Highlands — A shopping and dining district with many pet-friendly outdoor patios. Great for a casual outing with your dog on a weekend afternoon.

Randol Mill Park — 1901 W. Randol Mill Rd. in 76012. Not a neighborhood park, whatever the listings say: it is a 149.4-acre community park with concrete and nature trails, fishing ponds, an aquatic center, tennis and pickleball courts and a skatepark. A nature trail meanders around Randol Mill Pond and through the park, and the four flower beds along it are 21 feet wide and up to 1,500 feet long, replanted three or four times a year. The park is named for Robert A. Randol, who bought the 1856 grain mill here and owned it until his death in 1922; the mill burned in 1933 and was never rebuilt. In summer the city runs Doggie Dip days at the Randol Mill Family Aquatic Center, 1924 Randol Mill Park Road, where dogs get the fountains to themselves for about $5 — small dogs under 25 lbs first, then the big ones.

Why can’t you find my address from my ZIP code?

Two quirks account for almost every case. 76019 belongs to UTA as a campus-only ZIP rather than a residential area, and 76003, 76004 and 76007 are post-office boxes only. If you are quoting one of those four, we will need your street address to place you with the right sitter. Everything else in Arlington sits inside the thirteen delivery ZIPs listed above.

Does Arlington require me to license my pet?

Yes, and it catches out new residents. The city requires your dog or cat to be licensed annually with proof of current rabies vaccination. The fee is $7 for an altered animal or $30 if it is not altered. Animal Services is at 1000 SE Green Oaks Boulevard in 76018 if you need to sort it out. It is your responsibility rather than ours, but we would rather you hear it from us than from a citation.

Is it true Arlington bans tethering a dog?

Tethering a dog to a stationary object or a trolley system is prohibited, though walking on a hand-held leash is perfectly fine. It is worth knowing if you were thinking of leaving a dog clipped to a run in the yard between visits. Our sitters walk on a hand-held leash as a matter of course, so nothing about our visits runs into that ordinance.

Only on a leash with your sitter. There is no boarding, no daycare, no group play and no transport in a van. Meals, fresh water, litter, medication, a walk from your own front door, genuine attention and a look over the house all happen where your animals already live, and the door is locked behind the sitter when she goes.

Is there a free consultation first?

Yes, at no charge and with nothing owed afterward. Arlington is the reason we will not skip it.
