Cat sitting in Dallas

Dallas’s best spots for dogs

With Dallas being the largest city in our service area, our sitters have explored every corner. Here are their top recommendations:

NorthBark Dog Park — 4899 Gramercy Oaks Drive, Dallas 75287, 22.3 acres in far North Dallas near the Dallas North Tollway and the President George Bush Turnpike. Dallas Park and Recreation calls it the largest of its kind in North Texas: a doggy lake with its own dog beach, a six-foot-wide loop trail, a pavilion, and dog showers set inside metal fencing cut with dog silhouettes. It is open Wednesday through Monday, 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., and closed every Tuesday for maintenance — plus closed on rain days, which is why we check the city’s Dog Park Hotline at (214) 614-6711 before anyone drives out there.

White Rock Lake Park Loop Trail — the City of Dallas measures this loop at 9.4 miles and calls it the most popular trail in the park system. It links Civilian Conservation Corps picnic structures built in the 1930s, the Mockingbird Point dog park at 8000 E. Mockingbird Lane in 75218, and the White Rock Creek Greenbelt Trail, so a lap can turn into a much longer walk without ever crossing traffic. Dallas Park and Recreation has posted construction closures along sections of it, so we check the trail notices before we promise anyone a specific route.

Katy Trail — 3.5 miles of former railbed between the Uptown and Oak Lawn neighborhoods, running from just north of the American Airlines Center up to Central Expressway. The city counts it as a 26-acre linear park, and on a Saturday morning it is the densest stretch of leashed-dog traffic in Dallas. The Katy Trail Ice House at 3127 Routh Street, Dallas 75201, sits right on it, with dogs welcome on the beer garden patio but not inside.

Eleven off-leash parks, and two closure days worth memorizing — Dallas Park and Recreation runs eleven off-leash dog parks: Barry Annino (Bark Park Central) in Deep Ellum, Carpenter, Crockett, Harwood, Klyde Warren, Lakeland Hills, Main Street Garden, NorthBark, Parkhill, Wagging Tail, and the White Rock Lake dog park at Mockingbird Point. NorthBark closes Tuesdays, Mockingbird Point closes Mondays, and all of them shut on rain days — the Dog Park Hotline and Rain Out Line at (214) 614-6711 is the only reliable way to know before you load the car. We do not take client dogs off leash while we are on the clock, but we will happily route a leashed walk past one so you can take the off-leash session together.

What Dallas actually requires of you — Chapter 7 of the Dallas City Code has applied to every dog and cat in the city since June 17, 2017: animals four months and older must be microchipped, and mandatory microchipping replaced the old pet registration system outright. You are required to keep your details current with your chip company within 30 days of any change, which is a much better errand before a trip than after one. Rabies vaccination (7-4.1), microchipping (7-4.2) and spay/neuter past six months (7-4.10) are all “Fix It Ticket” offenses, so proof of compliance can be filed with the municipal court and the citation dismissed without a hearing. Do I drop my pet off somewhere, or do you come to my house?

We come to you. There is no facility, no kennel, no van full of other people’s dogs. Your cat stays on her windowsill and your dog sleeps in his own bed. A sitter arrives, does the visit in your home, and leaves the house locked behind her. For most pets the stress of being moved is the worst part of their owner traveling, and this removes it entirely.

Is the meet-and-greet really free?

Yes, and we would rather you use it. A sitter comes to your house before the first paid visit, meets your animals on their own floor, walks the route with you, and learns where the leash, the litter, the food and the shutoff valve live. You get to decide whether this is the person you want holding your key. There is no charge and no obligation to book afterward.

Are your Dallas sitters employees or independent contractors?

Employees — W-2, on payroll, with taxes withheld. Every one of the 250-plus people on our staff cleared a background check before their first shift, and every one is bonded and covered by our commercial liability insurance. That matters because if a contractor damages your home, you are usually the one chasing them. If our employee does, our policy answers for it.

What happens if my sitter gets sick in the middle of my trip?

Someone else shows up, and you hear about it from us before you notice anything. Dallas is our deepest-staffed area, so there is always another trained sitter within a few minutes of your street. Your pet’s written care instructions live in our system rather than in one person’s head, so the substitute arrives already knowing that the orange cat hides and the back gate sticks.

Can you give my pet medication?

We go through the dose, the timing and your vet’s contact information at the meet-and-greet, and we write it down rather than trusting memory. If your animal is on a schedule that has to hold to the hour, say so when you book so we can build the visit times around the medication instead of the reverse.

Do you cover high-rise condos and apartment buildings?

Regularly, and downtown and Uptown are where most of that work is. Fobs, elevator restrictions, front-desk guest lists, gated garages, package rooms and after-hours entrances all get sorted out at the meet-and-greet, not improvised at 9 p.m. If your building requires a sitter to be registered with management or added to an approved-visitor list, tell us early and we will get the paperwork done before your first visit.

I need midday walks near White Rock Lake or the Katy Trail. Can you do that?

Yes — both are in heavy rotation for our walkers. The City puts the White Rock Lake loop at 9.4 miles, and the Katy Trail runs about 3.5 miles from Uptown toward Knox-Henderson, so there is room to build anything from a short leg-stretch to a real outing. In July and August we shift these walks toward the early morning or the evening, because Dallas pavement holds heat long after the air cools.

Will you take my dog to NorthBark or another off-leash park?

No — our sitters keep client dogs leashed while they are on the clock, so we do not turn your dog loose in an off-leash run. That is an outing for you to have with your own dog. For when you do go: NorthBark covers 22.3 acres at 4899 Gramercy Oaks Drive, 75287, and it closes Tuesdays for maintenance. I’m flying out of Love Field or DFW. How do you time the visits?

Around your flights, not around a fixed route. Our phones are staffed 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Central, and visits can be scheduled across that whole window, which is usually enough to cover an early departure out of Love Field and a late return through DFW. Tell us the itinerary and we will place the first and last visits so your pets are not sitting through an unnecessarily long gap on either end.

Do you offer overnight stays in Dallas?

We build extended visits and custom schedules rather than selling a single overnight product, because what people actually need varies — a puppy might want four visits a day while an older dog does better with one long evening stay.
