Cat sitting in Las Colinas

Cats are a large share of the work in these buildings, and none of them want to be carried through a lobby. Sitters give medication, insulin shots, sub-q fluids and asthma inhalers in the apartment. Mandalay Canal Walk — Officially the Mandalay Canal Walk at Las Colinas, this is the paved path along the constructed canals off Lake Carolyn. Shaded stretches, steps down to the water and restaurant frontage. It is our walkers’ most-used Las Colinas route, and it stays leashed the whole way. A caution worth naming: there are low walls and drops straight into the canal, so we keep a short leash on dogs who lunge at ducks.

Williams Square & the Mustangs of Las Colinas — The bronze mustang sculpture at Williams Square is the landmark everyone uses as a meeting point. A short leashed loop from the canals, with the kind of open plaza a high-rise dog actually wants after an elevator ride.

Lake Carolyn — The scenic lake in the center of Las Colinas surrounded by walking paths and green space. Great for a shorter leashed walk with waterfront views. Several restaurants along the lake have pet-friendly patios.

Water Street — The dining and retail stretch on Lake Carolyn, at the north end of the canal walk. Several patios here seat dogs, though policies change with the tenants, so check before you settle in. Useful to know if you want a walk that ends somewhere rather than looping back.

Campion Trail — Over 22 miles of paved trail along the Elm Fork of the Trinity River, running right through Las Colinas. Dogs on leash are welcome. Beautiful scenery, bridges, and connections to other trail systems. Arguably the best trail in all of Irving — and it starts in your neighborhood. On the clock we keep walks leashed here. South Irving trailheads and MacArthur Park notes live on the Irving page.

Irving Dog Park — The city’s off-leash park, just under five acres at 4140 Valley View Lane. It has water on site but no restrooms. On the clock our sitters keep dogs leashed, so we do not turn a client’s dog loose in the run. The canal walk and Lake Carolyn stay leashed instead, which is what most of our clients here prefer anyway.

Cimarron Park (Valley Ranch) — Just north in Valley Ranch at 201 Red River Trail, Cimarron Park runs to almost 16 acres with trails and open ground. Worth the short drive if your dog wants distance rather than scenery. More on the Valley Ranch page.

How much is pet sitting in Las Colinas?

$25 for a 25-minute visit with one pet and $3 per extra pet, with dog walking plans from $23. High-rise addresses do not cost more, even though they take longer to get into — the elevator ride is our problem, not a line item on your bill.

Is Las Colinas a real city, or part of Irving?

Part of Irving, and legally there is no ambiguity: Las Colinas is a master-planned district inside the City of Irving, not a municipality. It has no mayor, no city hall and no police department of its own. What it does have is a distinct enough character — canals, towers, concierge desks — that pet care here is a different job from pet care in south Irving.

Why won’t the Postal Service accept “Las Colinas” as our city?

Because it isn’t one, as far as USPS is concerned. Las Colinas sits in ZIP 75039, and the only city name the Postal Service recognizes for that code is Irving — there is no accepted alternate. So “Las Colinas, TX 75039” is technically an invalid address even though everyone here uses it. Write Irving on the envelope and Las Colinas on everything else. For us it makes no difference; we route by street.

Our building has a concierge desk and key fobs. How does the sitter get in?

We set it up formally before the first visit rather than improvising on day one. Depending on the building that means registering the sitter with the concierge, being added to a guest list, or being issued a fob or elevator credential — and some towers will only release those to you in person. BLVD, the Bridges at Las Colinas and the O’Connor condos each handle it differently. We sort out which applies at the free consultation.

Which building setups do you deal with most here?

High-rise and luxury apartment living is the standard Las Colinas booking: fobs, concierge desks, controlled elevators, parking garages and package rooms. That means a visit has a front end most people never think about — parking, badging in, and getting to a floor — before anyone sees your dog. We schedule with that built in, which is why we would rather not squeeze a Las Colinas visit into a 15-minute slot.

What does a Las Colinas dog walk look like?

The Mandalay Canal Walk is the most-used route by a wide margin — officially the Mandalay Canal Walk at Las Colinas, a paved path along the constructed canals off Lake Carolyn, with shaded stretches, steps down to the water and restaurant frontage. Beyond that, Lake Carolyn’s surrounding paths make a shorter loop with water views, and the Campion Trail is close enough for a longer outing.

Is the canal walk actually safe for a dog?

Mostly, with one hazard worth naming plainly: there are low walls along the canal with drops straight into the water, and ducks. A dog that lunges at a bird can be over a low wall before a handler reacts. We keep a short leash on dogs who fixate on ducks and stay to the inside of the path. It is a lovely walk — it is just not a place to be casual with a retractable leash.

What’s the Williams Square mustang sculpture area like for a walk?

It is the landmark everyone in Las Colinas uses as a meeting point, and it makes a short leashed loop off the canals. The reason our sitters like it is specific: it is a big open plaza, which is exactly what a high-rise dog wants after a long elevator ride down. For a dog with no yard, ninety seconds of open pavement does real work.

We’re on the Cottonwood Valley or golf-course side. Is that still Las Colinas?

Yes. Cottonwood Valley’s residential streets and golf-course neighborhoods sit on the Las Colinas side and are inside this team’s area, as are the buildings around Lake Carolyn and Water Street, and the condos and offices near the Toyota Music Factory just west. It is a mix of single-family and tower living, and we assign accordingly.

Isn’t Valley Ranch the one with the canals?

Both have canals, which is exactly why people get confused. Las Colinas has the Mandalay Canal system off Lake Carolyn — the one with the restaurant frontage and the water taxi history. Valley Ranch, over in 75063, has its own separate network of landscaped canal walkways through residential neighborhoods. Two different systems, two different ZIPs, both inside Irving. If a sitter cannot tell you which one you live on, they do not work here.

Our dog is alone in a condo all day with no yard. What do you recommend?

A midday walk, and usually a consistent one at the same time each day. No-yard dogs in Las Colinas do not just need exercise, they need a scheduled reason to relieve themselves that is not eight hours after breakfast. Daily dog walking on a fixed schedule is our single most common booking in this ZIP, and the consistency matters more to the dog than the distance.

Who employs the sitter who comes to Las Colinas?

W-2 employees, background-checked, insured and bonded by the company — never gig workers. This matters in a building with a concierge: a professional company can be registered as a vendor, carries insurance the HOA can verify, and will still exist next month. A freelancer with a phone app usually cannot clear those hurdles.

Do we meet the sitter first, and does it cost anything?

Free, at your home, with no obligation. In a tower this visit is where we test the access chain end to end — garage, lobby, elevator, door — because the failure point is almost never the key. Your pets also get to meet the sitter without a suitcase by the door.

What happens if our sitter is unavailable mid-trip?

Another Las Colinas sitter takes the remaining visits and we notify you. Building credentials and access notes are recorded centrally, so the backup can actually get in — which is the specific thing that goes wrong when people hire an individual and that individual gets sick on day two of a ten-day trip.

Can the sitter medicate a cat twice a day here?
