Dalrock Road corridor — The central spine of Rowlett connecting the older neighborhoods to the newer developments. Mix of established homes and apartment communities.

Toler Bay, Waterview and the smaller lake coves — quieter, smaller lakeside pockets with easy water access. First, the city straddles a county line: most of Rowlett is in Dallas County, but the eastern edge is in Rockwall County. Second, the lake itself is inside the City of Dallas limits — Dallas owns and controls the water, and Rowlett owns the shoreline parks. Here is what our local sitters actually use.

Rowlett Creek Preserve — worth being precise about, because the name misleads people: the preserve is at 2525 Castle Drive off Centerville Road in Garland, on Dallas County open space maintained by the City of Garland. Census boundary data puts every corner of it inside Garland city limits in the 75040 area, even though Garland’s own facility listing prints a Rowlett 75089 mailing address for it with the Dallas Off-Road Bicycle Association. It is a short drive from most Rowlett addresses and it is excellent: 97 acres, 16.3 miles of unpaved trail laid out as 14 numbered staked loops you can mix into anything from a one-mile stroll to a 16-mile day, with difficulty rising as the loop numbers do. The traffic rule matters if you bring a dog — cyclists ride the loops clockwise while runners and hikers are asked to go counterclockwise, so you see bikes coming instead of hearing them behind you. There is a gazebo with two picnic areas and a grill, portable restrooms and a potable water station. Hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Lakeside Park — 3101 C.A. Roan Drive, and the one that genuinely delivers the Lake Ray Hubbard walk: hiking and biking trails, a fishing pier, covered pavilions, a sand volleyball court, a playground and picnic tables. It is also the designated overflow parking for Paddle Point Park at 6301 Miller Road, so unload your kayak there and park here.

Pecan Grove Park — 5300 Main Street in 75088. Despite the way it usually gets described, this one is not on the water. It is Rowlett’s civic campus: the Rowlett Community Centre, the Wet Zone waterpark, Kids Kingdom Playground, the historic Coyle House, a practice soccer field, outdoor exercise equipment and hiking and biking trails. Good midday walk, no lake view.

Scentral Bark Dog Park at Herfurth Park — 4601 Centennial in 75088, and Rowlett’s first and only city dog park. Two separate areas split at 30 pounds: 30-plus on the large side, under 30 on the small side. Each has trees, real shade and benches, and the surfaces are deliberately mixed between grass and crushed granite so dogs that hate one still have the other. There is a central plaza with restrooms and drinking fountains for people and for dogs. The city credits donations and volunteer labor for the whole thing. Herfurth Park also has tennis, pickleball, basketball, an in-line hockey rink and pavilions, and Rowlett park hours run 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. — an hour later than Garland and Dallas.

Rowlett Community Park — 8700 St. Andrews Drive in 75089, the big one. Fishing piers, ponds, horseshoe pits, two covered playgrounds, sand volleyball, soccer and baseball and softball fields, a concession building, large pavilions, restrooms and hiking and biking trails. It is the most reliable place in the city to get a full 25-minute walk in without repeating yourself.

Scenic Point Park — 9501 Lakeview Parkway, with a running and walking trail and lake views. One warning that saves a wasted trip: the city lists the boardwalk here as permanently closed, so the water-level views people remember are gone.

The Rowlett rules we work under — city park rules are short and specific: hours are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., pets must be leashed and kept away from playgrounds, swimming in the lakes is prohibited, alcohol and glass are out, and grills are only allowed in enclosed fireplaces or park grills. On the ordinance side, Chapter 6-4 makes it unlawful for the owner of any animal other than a cat to let it run at large, and cats are only impounded on a nuisance or health complaint. Section 6-71 requires every dog, cat and ferret to have its rabies vaccination registered with the Animal Shelter annually, with the city-issued tag worn alongside the rabies tag; the city is blunt that “microchips are not a replacement for tags.” Registration is $10 for a spayed or neutered pet or one under six months, $20 if unaltered, and free for residents 60 and over whose pet is altered or under six months.

If a pet does get out — the Rowlett Animal Shelter is at 4402 Industrial Street, (972) 412-6219, open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed Sunday and Monday except for emergencies. Only animals found inside Rowlett city limits are accepted, and strays are held five days. The detail worth acting on: if it is your first-ever redemption and your pet is wearing a current rabies tag and a current city registration tag at intake, Rowlett releases the pet at no charge. Without tags it is $30 the first time, $60 the second, $90 after that, plus $10 per night and a $25 late registration fee. Ten dollars a year is cheap insurance, and it is the sort of thing we check during a meet-and-greet.
