DeSoto’s best spots for pet owners

DeSoto and the surrounding Best Southwest area have excellent outdoor spaces for pet owners. Here are the spots our sitters recommend:

Grimes Park — 501 E. Wintergreen Road, 75115. DeSoto classes this one as a regional park and it is the busiest thing in the city’s inventory, split into three use zones including the covered DeSoto BMX track at the north end off 500 E. Wintergreen. It is programmed hard with sports, so the quiet leashed loops are early morning and mid-afternoon on weekdays. A daily-walk staple for Woodland Hills and Canterbury clients.

DeSoto does not have an off-leash dog park. This is worth saying plainly, because plenty of listings claim otherwise. The city’s park inventory runs to three community parks, six neighborhood parks, three regional parks and three trails, and not one of them is a fenced off-leash area. A dog park is one of the most consistent requests in DeSoto’s Parks, Recreation, Open Space & Trails Master Plan, so it may come, but it is not here yet. Until it is, everything below is a leashed walk — which is all we do on the clock anyway.

Cedar Hill State Park — 1570 West FM 1382, about fifteen minutes west, on the shore of 7,500-acre Joe Pool Lake. Leashed dogs are welcome on the trails, and Texas Parks and Wildlife requires a leash no longer than six feet. The DORBA Trail crisscrosses 1,200 acres and is open to hikers as well as bikers, but it closes when wet — call (972) 291-3900 before you drive out. Day-use entry is $7 per adult. Roy Orr Trail — the main component of the DeSoto trail system: 3.6 miles of 8-foot-wide concrete running along Ten Mile Creek through the middle of town, with the Town Center amphitheater sitting above it. This is the route our daily dog walking clients along Pleasant Run Road actually use when they want more than a neighborhood sidewalk. The DeSoto Ranch Nature Trail is the softer alternative at 1.2 miles of granite surface with boardwalks, two ponds, a wildflower area and benches.

Paul S. Dryer Preserve at Windmill Hill — 1410 N. Duncanville Road, 75 acres of woods set aside jointly by the City of DeSoto and Dallas County as a nature preserve. It is the closest thing DeSoto has to a real hike, and it stays shaded when the Roy Orr Trail concrete is radiating heat in August. Leashed only, and footing gets slick after rain.

Cedar Hill next door spills into Ellis County and Mansfield touches three counties. In DeSoto, one ZIP and one county cover everyone, which makes your paperwork simpler than your neighbors’.

Does DeSoto have a dog park?

No. The city’s park system runs to community parks, neighborhood parks, regional parks and trails, and none of them is a fenced off-leash area. A dog park is one of the recurring requests in DeSoto’s own Parks, Recreation, Open Space and Trails Master Plan, so it may arrive eventually, but the city’s site lists it as a want and not a facility. Ignore any directory that tells you otherwise, and save yourself the drive.

So every DeSoto walk you do is on a leash?

Where does a dog go in DeSoto when it is 105 degrees?

Duncanville’s own city site uses the phrase. It matters to you mainly because a lot of pet services list themselves under all four cities at once, so a business that looks like it is in DeSoto may actually be a fifteen-minute drive away. Ours is a real DeSoto route, not a regional listing.

My dog is missing. Does DeSoto have its own shelter?

No, and this surprises people. DeSoto shares the Tri-City Animal Shelter and Adoption Center with Cedar Hill and Duncanville, and the building is in Cedar Hill at 1150 E. Pleasant Run Rd., 75104, (972) 291-5335. So a dog picked up on your DeSoto street is likely to be waiting for you in another city. Keep that number saved, keep the microchip registration current, and put a phone number on the tag.

Do I meet the sitter first, and does that cost anything?

You meet them first, and it is free. We come to your DeSoto home before any paid visit, walk the house with you, and write down the routine, the feeding amounts, the medication, the vet, and what you want done if something goes sideways.
