Cedar Hill State Park — 1570 West FM 1382, 75104, (972) 291-3900. The landmark on the west side of town, and Census boundary data confirms the park sits squarely inside Cedar Hill city limits. Leashed dogs are welcome on the trails and outdoor areas but not in park buildings or on the swim beach, and Texas Parks and Wildlife caps the leash at six feet. The DORBA Trail crisscrosses 1,200 acres and is open to hikers as well as bikers, but it closes whenever it is wet — always call before driving out. Day use runs $7 per adult, and there are 350 developed campsites plus the restored Penn Farm on site. Worth being precise about the lake: Joe Pool Lake covers 7,500 acres, and its open water and west shore sit inside Grand Prairie city limits, not Cedar Hill’s. What Cedar Hill owns is the southern shoreline the state park runs along.

Waterford Oaks Park — 320 N. Waterford Oaks Drive, 6.37 acres with a fishing pond and fountain, a 12-by-12 gazebo with no power outlets, picnic tables and a 0.4-mile paved trail that acts as a linear connector into the wider trail system at Hageman and Waterford Oaks. Quiet, close, and a daily-walk staple for Waterford Oaks and nearby Cedar Crest homes.

Valley Ridge Park — 2850 Park Ridge Drive, and the one to use when a dog needs real distance: 164 acres with about a mile and a half of trail and an amphitheater. This is the largest park in the city inventory. Pioneer Park is a different animal entirely — a quarter-acre pocket park at the corner of Cedar and Houston streets downtown, fine for a five-minute leg-stretch and nothing more, so do not plan a walk around it. High Pointe families also use Bradford Park, J.W. Williams Park, The Meadows Park and Ramsey Park inside the PID, and Cedar Mountain Preserve and the Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center cover the wilder end of the city’s roughly sixty miles of trail.

Cedar Hill’s first city dog park is under construction. The city broke ground on Legacy Dog Park on May 12, 2026 on the Trinity Church campus on East Pleasant Run Road — four acres, separate play areas for small and large dogs, shaded seating, pet-friendly landscaping and a sidewalk connection out to Pleasant Run. No opening date has been announced, so it is not a place you can take a dog this weekend. Until it opens, the off-leash option in town is Furry Friends Field, a private facility at 611 Springtime Drive, 75104 — call ahead, because access and hours are set by the owner rather than the city and we could not confirm them from an official source. We do not run off-leash sessions on the clock in either case; we will do a leashed loop nearby and leave the off-leash time to you.

Uptown Boulevard and historic downtown — Cedar Hill’s civic heart, and the same street as City Hall at 285 Uptown Boulevard. Dick’s Uptown Cafe at 610 Uptown Blvd., Suite 100 has a small dog-friendly patio and opens at 7 a.m.; Mudhook Bar and Kitchen on FM 1382 has outdoor seating where well-behaved dogs are welcome. Both were still open when we last checked. A relaxed post-walk stop after a Valley Ridge loop.

Off-leash time is yours to give your dog. We will give you a solid leashed loop instead.

Can a sitter get through the gate at High Pointe or a similar street here?
