Highland Village’s Best Spots for Pet Owners

K-9 Kastle, the dog park at Unity Park — Somehow the most important pet destination in town, and the one nobody outside Highland Village seems to know about. Unity Park is a 38-acre community park, and its dog park — officially Unity Dog Park, universally called K-9 Kastle — has separate small-dog and general sections with a holding area at the entrance where you unleash before going in. Hours are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., closed every Thursday for routine maintenance, and parks staff will shut it at any time after heavy rain to let the turf dry out. Check the city site before you drive over. It is a self-policing park, which works better here than you might expect.
Copperas Branch Park — The busy one, on Lewisville Lake with its own boat ramp. Wooded walking trails, open fields, sports facilities and a playground, and the Copperas Trail runs 0.92 miles through it. Leashed dogs are welcome on the trails, and this is where a good share of our daily walks happen. On the clock we keep walks leashed here, always.
Doubletree Ranch Park — The town’s event park as much as its walking park: paths, a pond, picnic areas, and a lawn that hosts concerts, Village Fest in the autumn and Christmas at the Ranch in December — the latter with actual reindeer and a snow hill trucked in. Lovely most of the year, and worth avoiding with a noise-sensitive dog on event weekends. If your dog hates a crowd, this is the park to check the calendar for.
Pilot Knoll Park — On the Lewisville Lake shoreline with a boat ramp and a campground. Lake access, trails, and the most genuinely scenic leashed walk in Highland Village. Note that the Pilot Knoll trails themselves are not city-managed — Corinth says as much about its end of them — so surface and signage change as you go. We keep these walks leashed on the clock, and we do not let dogs into the water on a paid visit.
The Highland Village trail system — The city puts it plainly: wherever you are in Highland Village, you are not far from a trail connection, and it explicitly names dog walkers among the people it built the network for. The named routes and their real distances: City Trail at 2.74 miles, Copperas Trail at 0.92 miles, Castlewood Trail at 0.67 miles, and Victoria Trail at 0.64 miles. They link parks, lake access, a nature preserve, ponds and the shops, which means a walker can build a different route every day of the week without ever putting a dog in a car.
The smaller parks worth knowing — Victoria Park is 5.69 acres with benches and a trail. Lower Sellmeyer Park is a single acre with a playground, a grill and a picnic table. Brazos Park sits with the Municipal Complex at 1000 Highland Village Road across 14.4 acres, and Bruce Lockhart Lions Club Park runs 3.16. Then Wichita Forest, Village, Murray, Peninsula, Silverthorne and Turpin. For a dog who does better without other dogs around, the small ones are the answer, and there are plenty.
The Shops at Highland Village and the Justin Road centers — Several restaurants along here keep patios that welcome a leashed dog, and the retail strip runs from The Shops through Highland Village Town Center and Tartan Square at 2230—2950 Justin Road. Justin Road is FM 407 and carried close to 27,000 vehicles a day in 2024, so this is a pavement walk with traffic beside it, not a park walk. Pleasant for a confident dog. Not the place to start with a nervous one.
Two practical Highland Village notes — First, when the first freeze appears in the forecast the city begins winterizing parks and trails, which includes turning the water off — so from roughly late autumn you should carry water rather than count on a fountain. Second, the city runs lightning detection at its parks, and when it sounds, a walk is over. Both are the sort of thing that decides whether a visit goes to plan.

Highland Shores
The largest development in the city by a wide margin — the city’s own park plan notes that Highland Shores developed vast tracts over two decades. It has its own homeowners association, which maintains the fences along Highland Shores Boulevard and can be reached at (972) 317-5139. Curving streets, mature trees, and the Scottish street names Highland Village is quietly known for: Tartan Trail, Edinburgh Court, Inverness Circle, Glasgow Court, Scottish Mist Trail. Good walking, and easy to get turned around in if you do not live here.
Briarhill, Village Parkway and the western subdivisions
West of Highland Shores and Village Parkway, where several other builders filled in after the Shores. Briarhill Boulevard and Briarhill Middle School anchor this side, along with Mosswood, Meadow Crest, Willow Creek Estates, Hickory Ridge and Saddle Brook. Unity Park and K-9 Kastle are the natural destination from here, about a mile from the Justin Road retail strip.
The lake side — Copperas Branch and Pilot Knoll
The northern and eastern edges, running down to Lewisville Lake. Copperas Branch Park and Pilot Knoll Park both sit here, and both have boat ramps; Pilot Knoll also has a campground. Peninsula Park and Sunset Point are along this stretch too. These are the addresses where a sitter needs to know that lake wind and a nervous dog do not mix, and where we keep every walk leashed and out of the water on a paid visit.
Highland Meadows and the Sellmeyer side
Highland Meadows Drive, Sellmeyer Lane, Doubletree Drive, Horseshoe Drive and the streets around them, with Lower Sellmeyer Park — all of one acre — and Victoria Park at 5.69 acres nearby. Established, quiet, and the part of town where the small parks earn their keep, because a one-acre park with a single picnic table is exactly right for a dog who would rather not meet anybody.

This is the detail worth pinning down, because it confuses almost everyone. 75077 is not Highland Village alone. The same ZIP code covers parts of Flower Mound along Justin Road, parts of Lewisville, and the towns of Copper Canyon and Double Oak — five separate municipalities sharing one ZIP, each with its own police department and its own animal ordinance. So if your neighbor two streets over says they live in Flower Mound and you both write 75077, you are both right. Give us the street address and we will work out whose sitter you are.
