Cat sitting in Denton

Whether she lives in a campus apartment, an Oak-Hickory bungalow or a house out at Robson Ranch, a Denton cat is better left where she is than carried off somewhere strange. Denton’s best spots for pet owners

Denton is a unique city. It is large and vibrant, but it is kinda out there on its own — not in anyone’s way. It has everything a pet lover needs. Here are the spots our sitters recommend:

Wiggly Field Dog Park — Denton’s original off-leash park, at 1760 E Ryan Road on the south side, tucked inside the 69-acre Lake Forest Park. Separate fenced runs for large dogs and for small or shy dogs, drinking fountains for both people and dogs, and paved parking. No restrooms, so plan accordingly. The detail that catches everyone out: Wiggly Field closes every Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for mowing. Lake Forest Park’s own soft-surface and concrete trails run right alongside the pens, and that is where we walk when we are on the clock.

North Lakes Dog Park — The newer one, on the north side at 808 W Windsor Drive. Parking is behind the recycling center and shared with the radio-control model airfield — the sort of direction you only get from someone who has actually been. It sits within North Lakes Park, which runs 351 acres with two lakes, a 1.32-mile concrete trail and a 0.85-mile soft-surface trail, so there is real leashed walking here even when the pens are full.

South Lakes Park — 187 acres off Hobson Lane: a 2.37-mile concrete trail, a 0.55-mile soft loop that ties into it, lakes with fishing piers, and — the part that actually matters on a dog walk — three dog waste stations on the grounds. Leashed dogs welcome. This is the quiet morning loop for walkers who live toward 76205 and the TWU side of town.

A Denton detail worth knowing before a winter walk — The city shuts off and winterizes public restrooms in its parks from November 15 through March 15 so the pipes do not freeze. Clear Creek keeps a portable toilet by the Collins Road lot year-round. Otherwise, from mid-November to mid-March, assume there is nothing open.

Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center — The gateway to more than 2,900 acres of bottomland hardwood forest, upland prairie, and wetland, at 3310 Collins Road on the far east side. Leashed dogs are expressly permitted on the trails — the city says so in as many words — and the trails are open daily 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. unless conditions close them. Hikers only: no bikes, horses, or ATVs. There is a portable toilet at the Collins Road lot and no drinking water when the education center is shut, so carry your own for both of you. The city leases the land from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The Clear Creek caveat nobody mentions — Part of the wider Clear Creek Natural Heritage Area is a permitted hunting and wildlife management area — upwards of 1,600 acres of it — and the season runs from September 1 into mid-May. Hunting is confined to land east of the Elm Fork of the Trinity River, and it is prohibited at the Collins Road and Hartlee Field Road areas, which is precisely where the trails and the nature center sit. So your dog walk is fine. Just do not go wandering east of the river in November, and know that dove, waterfowl, turkey, feral hog and small game are all legal there with a permit. Deer hunting is not.

Denton Square — The heart of the city and a genuinely good leashed outing: the courthouse square is walkable, and several restaurants around it keep patios that welcome dogs. One rule worth knowing, because it catches people: Denton’s ordinance makes it unlawful to leave an animal unattended in any public place even while leashed. The dog is welcome on the Square. The dog cannot be clipped to a bike rack while you run inside.

Recycled Books — The pink Victorian on the corner of the Square, and about the most Denton thing there is. Your dog waits outside with a person, not tied to the railing alone — see the ordinance note above. We mention it because every Denton pet owner knows it, and because it is the landmark we use when describing where a walk starts.

Dog Days of Denton — The Denton Parks Foundation has run this every September for more than three decades; the 2026 edition was the 33rd. Free admission, vendors and contests, and the signature bit is dogs swimming in the Civic Center Pool at 515 N. Bell Avenue before it closes for the season — that part needs a V.I.Paw ticket. Proceeds go to the Lily Cantu Inclusive Playground at North Lakes Park. If you have just moved to Denton with a dog, it is the fastest way to meet the rest of them.

Denton Neighborhoods We Serve

Denton is the county seat and it is physically big — six residential ZIP codes, two universities, and a western edge that reaches most of the way to Argyle. A sitter who lives near the Square is not the right sitter for Robson Ranch, and we do not pretend otherwise. Here is how the city actually breaks down, and who covers what.

76201 — the Square, Oak-Hickory, and the UNT edge

The oldest part of Denton. The courthouse square, the Oak and Hickory Street bungalows, and the streets that run into the north side of the UNT campus. Narrow driveways, alleys, porches, and a lot of rent houses full of students with cats. Quakertown Civic Center sits at 321 E. McKinney here. Walks in 76201 are sidewalk walks — short blocks, plenty of shade, and a leashed loop past Recycled Books if your dog likes an audience.

76205 — TWU, South Lakes, and the Fort Worth Drive side

South and west of downtown: the Texas Woman’s University side of town, the neighborhoods off Fort Worth Drive and Dallas Drive, and the streets that feed into South Lakes Park on Hobson Lane. This is the ZIP with the best everyday dog walking in Denton, because South Lakes has 187 acres, more than three miles of combined concrete and dirt trail, and three dog waste stations.

76207 — Robson Ranch, Rayzor Ranch, and the west side

The fastest-changing part of the city. Robson Ranch is out here — a gated 55-plus community off Robson Ranch Road with its own entry procedure that our sitters already know — along with the Rayzor Ranch corridor, the neighborhoods off Bonnie Brae, North Lakes Park, and the Linda McNatt Animal Care and Adoption Center at 3717 N. Elm. Distances out here are longer than they look on a map, which is exactly why we staff 76207 separately.

76208 — east Denton and the Clear Creek side

East of Loop 288, out along East McKinney and East University toward Collins Road. Bigger lots, more acreage, more horses, and the trailhead for Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center. This ZIP also touches Corinth and Shady Shores, so an east Denton address and a Corinth address are often the same sitter.

76209 — Sherman Drive, Bell Avenue, and the northeast

Northeast Denton: the neighborhoods off Sherman Drive, the Bell Avenue corridor, and the Civic Center Pool at 515 N. Bell where Dog Days of Denton happens every September. Established streets, mature trees, and a lot of long-time Denton pet owners who have used the same vet for twenty years.

76210 — Teasley, Unicorn Lake, and Lake Forest

South Denton along Teasley Lane and Ryan Road, out to Unicorn Lake and the Lake Forest Park area. Wiggly Field Dog Park is in this part of town. 76210 is also shared with Corinth, so if your address is on the southern edge you may well have the same sitter as a neighbor whose mail says Corinth.

Two ZIP codes Denton shares with its neighbors

This trips people up, so it is worth saying plainly. 76208 and 76210 are not Denton-only. Corinth sits in both of them, Shady Shores is in 76208, and the northern edge of Lake Dallas brushes 76208 as well. That is not a mistake in your address — it is just how the boundaries fall. Practically, it means our Denton and Corinth teams overlap on purpose, and a request from either side gets whoever is genuinely closest.

What our Denton walkers actually know that an app does not

That Wiggly Field is shut Wednesday mornings for mowing and North Lakes Dog Park shares a lot with a model-aircraft runway. That park restrooms are winterized from November 15 to March 15. That the Clear Creek trails are hiker-only and close when the ground is bad. That the animal shelter is closed Wednesdays and Sundays, so a Wednesday stray means calling police dispatch at (940) 349-8181 instead. None of that is on a profile page. All of it decides whether a walk happens.
